Japanese riichi Mahjong

Riichi Mahjong is the Japanese variant of the traditional Chinese game, combining deep strategic play with ritualised rules and distinctive scoring. Over the 20th century Riichi evolved into a tightly structured, spectator‑friendly form of Mahjong that rewards timing, risk management, and psychological play. Today it enjoys a passionate following in Japan and a rapidly growing global community—especially online—where livestreams, tutorials, and competitive play have propelled its popularity.

Uniquely Riichi

Riichi adds several signature mechanics that set it apart from other Mahjong styles. Yaku (required hand conditions) define which hands are valid and shape strategic choices; riichi declarations let a player lock in a concealed hand for extra reward while signalling intent to opponents; and dora tiles act as visible score multipliers that create dramatic shifts in value. Additional features like furiten (self‑discard restrictions) and strict scoring granularity emphasise defensive reads and timing as much as raw hand‑building.

Trending in riichi community

In Japan, mahjong parlours have long been places where players sit for serious games—sometimes all day. Parlours often have automatic tables, comfortable seating, and, in some cases, money games. The largest Riichi community today is online, with strong crossover into manga and anime culture. In recent years, Riichi groups have started appearing in the West—at cafés and university clubs—which we’re glad to see. Beyond competition, Riichi is also a social game that brings people together.

“I’ve been playing Riichi online for years — I can’t wait to play with real people in London.”

How to Learn in London

Needless to say, there are plenty of online resources to learn Riichi—popular apps like Mahjong Soul and Tenhou both use Riichi rules. In London, in‑person options are more limited: some university clubs (eg. SOAS) and local Meetup groups (eg. Richmond) run regular games and often offer beginner tutorials.

If you find our location and services a good fit, here’s what we offer to learn Riichi Mahjong in London.

Newbie to Mahjong?

If you’re new to Mahjong, start with our Newbie workshop. Though it’s taught in Chinese classic style, the tiles and basic rules are the same Riichi builds on—so it’s the best entry point. These workshops run regularly and are popular, so just book a ticket for a convenient date and spend a fun afternoon exploring Mahjong. Book tickets 👉 Here. Alternatively, if you are looking for private group tutorial, then please hire one of our instructors 👉 Here.

Newbie to Riichi?

If you are not new to Mahjong, but new to Riichi, that’s easy. Because it won’t be hard for you to pick up this new style.

We don’t currently offer Riichi workshops, but you can join our Just Play sessions and learn from experienced players. We’ll give you a worksheet to follow during play so you can pick up the basics and get comfortable at the table maybe in your next visit.

Riichi players — come play with us on Saturdays!

Book a ticket to play Riichi with fellow enthusiasts in central London (E1). Two‑hour sessions are just £10 and include free tea and coffee.
