dear asia mahjong club

Looking for a london mahjong club to play mahjong regularly?

We established the London Mahjong Social Club to bring together players of various Mahjong styles, fostering connection and enjoyment in a welcoming environment. Unlike commercial clubs that require membership fees, we offer tickets for Just Play players who are not beginners and wish to participate in a two-hour game with fellow enthusiasts from our community. If you are a Mahjong lover and our Central London location in Aldgate is convenient for you, we invite you to book a ticket and join us at our Mahjong table. As always, expect fun games, great company, and an unbeatable atmosphere.

Book your tickets and come play

It’s simple as that. Book on a date you can come, you will always guarantee a seat at the table.

Play. Learn. Connect.

Discover our Mahjong Community

Mahjong is a fun and social board game that’s still quite new to many in London. Since it needs four players, it can be tricky to organise games on your own. In Asia, people often meet in Mahjong parlours to play together — and at Dear Asia, we’re creating that same community spirit right here in Central London.

Our players often start by learning the game in our workshops. Before long, many get hooked and want to play more — that’s why we offer Just Play sessions. We’re not a traditional club. There’s no need for membership or annual fees — just book a ticket and come enjoy a Saturday of Mahjong, good company, and great vibes.

📍 Where We Play

We meet at Dear Asia, Aldgate Tower E1, just a minute’s walk from Aldgate East station. Our space is modern, bright, and a perfect place to relax, play, and connect. We offer free tea and coffee, sometimes festive Asian treats too.

🀄 Who Can Join Just Play?

Just Play is for people who already know how to play Mahjong.

  • Players of Chinese Mahjong (Hong Kong style scoring rules), or if you have taken our Level 1 and 2 workshops.
  • Players of Riichi Mahjong who are looking for a place to play regularly with real people at our table
  • Players of American Mahjong, we might be one of the only public places to offer regular American Mahjong tables.

👉 All you need to do is book a ticket for the date that suits you.

💸 Why We Charge a Ticket Fee

While the running costs of our Central London venue, staff, and admin are high, we’ve worked hard to keep our Just Play tickets as affordable as possible.

We understand the appeal of free events, but we’re a school — not a charity run by volunteers — so unfortunately, we’re unable to offer these sessions for free.
🀄 Mahjong is a fun team activity that encourages collaboration, strategic thinking, and friendly competition.

learner Workshops

Level 1 Newbie Workshop

Perfect for total beginners, our Newbie Workshop will teach you the basics of Mahjong in a relaxed, friendly setting. You’ll learn the rules, tile names, how to build a winning hand, and how the game flows — all while actually playing! No experience needed. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to join casual games confidently. We provide all the materials, plus hot drinks to keep you cosy while you learn. It’s the perfect starting point for anyone curious about this iconic Asian game.

Level 2 Improver Workshop

Ready to level up? Our Improver Workshop is for players who already know the basics and want to deepen their skills. We’ll cover advanced rules like wind positions, flower/season tiles, scoring systems, and how to build higher-value winning hands. Our Mahjong Club FAQs

Everything we’ve been asked, and everything we try to tell new players joining our club.

Not quite for Chinese-style Just Play — scoring is part of what makes a hand count, so we’d point you to book tickets for our Level 2 Improver workshop first. It’s a fast way in: two hours and you’ll be playing to score confidently.

Message us on WhatsApp before you book — describe how you play and we can tell you if it’s close enough to Hong Kong style, or whether our Newbie or Level 2 workshop would be a better first step for you.

Yes — we don’t run a standalone Riichi workshop yet, so our Riichi Just Play tables are built for exactly this. You’ll get a worksheet to follow and support from more experienced players at the table while you pick up scoring live.

Absolutely — glad you found us. Just book a Just Play ticket for a date that works for you, no membership or regular attendance required. American Mahjong is one of our three styles at every session. We would love to grow this American Mahjong social club in London one person at a time.

Yes of course. We can decide sitting on the day. Some of our regulars also book separately but might have a preference to play with people they know already, or frankly people are generally happy to meet and play with new people. If you don’t sit with your friends, maybe you will make new friends at a different table.

Yes Aldgate Tower is a big office building, we run our classes and workshops from here, check out our visiting guide. On the day one of our colleagues will be on the ground floor until event start time to help you, so try not to be late. Otherwise, contact us if you have trouble finding the location.

None at all — come as you’re comfortable. Most people come straight from their Saturday plans.

A real mix — genuinely reflective of London itself. Mahjong works brilliantly across generations, and our players range from 15 to 75. What everyone has in common is a love of good company, a positive experience, and learning something new.

Social, first and foremost — good company and conversation matter as much as the game itself. You’re welcome to play seriously if that’s your style, but nobody’s there to intimidate you. One thing worth knowing: unlike traditional Mahjong parlours in Asia, no money changes hands here — we play purely for the love of the game.

Yes, of course — we won’t hold you up. Just bear in mind that a table needs all four players, so leaving early does affect the others’ game. If you know in advance you’ll need to go, try not to duck out too early — your tablemates will appreciate it.

Daughter — yes, if your daughter is over 15, we would suggest to book another ticket for her to have fun too. Dog — unfortunately no, no pet allowed into the building, sorry. Bike — also no, but there’s cycle parking near Aldgate Tower.

Of course — feel free to bring your own drinks or snacks. Just one thing to keep in mind: Mahjong tables aren’t especially spacious for four players, so you’ll want to keep food and drink managed carefully to avoid any spills over the game
