American Mahjong

American Mahjong is a distinct American adaptation of the traditional Chinese game, combining social play with a highly standardised rule set and a yearly changing card of valid hands. Over decades it evolved into a communal pastime with its own conventions, clubs, and organised play—popular in homes, community centres, and social groups across the United States, and increasingly noticed by international players.

Uniquely American

American Mahjong stands out for its predefined hands and standardized scoring. Each year the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) publishes an official card listing the legal hands; players use this card instead of calculating complex scores on the fly. The game also uses a slightly different tile set and terminology, and features mechanics like jokers/wild tiles, Charleston exchanges (goulash), and set combinations that make hand recognition and memorisation central to play.

Mahjong Craze across the pacific

Mahjong has taken on a new life in America. Celebrities openly talk about their Mahjong hobby, and a growing number of brands are producing colourful, cheerful sets that make the game feel fresh and fashionable. While we haven’t visited American parlours ourselves, it’s clear Mahjong is becoming a social staple for many — think cocktails and a Mahjong party at home, weekend get‑togethers with friends, or themed nights that mix snacks, music and play.

This shift has helped transform Mahjong from a niche pastime into a mainstream social activity: stylish sets make great conversation starters, influencers and press coverage raise its profile, and organised events—pop‑ups, clubs, and private parties—bring new players into the fold. The result is a lively, social Mahjong scene in which the game is as much about connection and atmosphere as it is about tiles and rules. We definitely think it sounds like a lot of fun.

“Our friends started playing American Mahjong and got hooked—now we want to try it too.”

The lessons are organized and meticulously tailored to students by Konomi 先生. I feel empowered and encouraged to practice Japanese even on days off. Konomi sensei is patient and focuses a lot on grammar, speaking and Kanji. Love the classes.

I enrolled my Daughter in the Japanese Beginner 1 course earlier this year, in preparation for a trip to Japan. She was made to feel very welcome and gained confidence, along with useful phrases to help her to socialise in Japan.
Dear Asia have been excellent communicators right from my initial enquiry, so I feel very comfortable with my child attending as they are on it and very professional.
The community within the group, and Dear Asia as a whole, is friendly and I like that they actively do social activities to boost learning and fun!
Overall the teacher, class and course made an excellent impression and my Daughter wanted to continue learning with them, so I’m very pleased.

How to Learn in London

American Mahjong is primarily played in the U.S., but we’ve had growing requests for it—some social circles here in London prefer American Mahjong over other styles. We usually recommend UK clients start with Chinese Classic as a beginner-friendly introduction to the world of Mahjong, then move to American Mahjong if they plan to play that version regularly with their friends. Below are two options we’ve put together for learning American Mahjong.

Hire an private instructor for your group

The most direct way to learn American Mahjong is to hire one of our instructors. On the booking page you can request the Mahjong style so we send a suitable teacher. In a first two‑hour session we’ll cover the full rules, though there may be limited time for extended play—American Mahjong isn’t the easiest entry point for complete newcomers.

If your group wants more practice, book a follow‑up session. From 2026 we’ll also offer dedicated American Mahjong tables at our Just Play sessions for players who already know the rules.

Our Newbie workshop

We’re not yet sure we can open a newbie American Mahjong workshop, but it’s on our pipeline. If you feel strongly about it, please send us a message to request one — we’ll log requests to help decide.
