private mahjong Lesson FAQs

Everything we’ve been asked, and everything we try to tell new players joining our club.

We teach three styles — Chinese Classic (Hong Kong rules), American Mahjong, and Japanese Riichi. If you’re not sure, Chinese Classic is the most traditional and easiest to find regular games for in London; American Mahjong suits groups who have connections with American players and/or were gifted some beautiful sets of American Mahjong tiles. Riichi suits players drawn to a more ritualised game, although it’s limiting to find playing groups in London.

Every style starts with a Newbie workshop covering the basics — tile types, forming sets, and overall game flow. We can almost guarantee you’ll leave your first workshop feeling like you’ve learned the game.
That said, to truly master a style — or play it “properly” — we recommend going further. For Chinese Mahjong, the second Improver workshop is essential: scoring will change your entire strategy. For American Mahjong, we recommend at least two more sessions to get comfortable navigating the NMJL card and thinking strategically and flexibly.

We recommend you book your first session first. If you want to book a number of following up sessions, discuss with us. We can make things easier for you by putting the sessions together in one invoice for example.

For the whole group — it’s a flat rate for the session, so it’s worth gathering friends to share the cost. Each session is 2 hours includes one instructor, one Mahjong set, and up to 8 copies of learning material.

One instructor can cover two tables in a single session. There are two things to keep in mind, though: first, you’ll need to provide a second Mahjong set, as the instructor only brings one; second, if the group is large enough that the instructor can’t finish the full tutorial within the 2 hours, extra time is billed in half-hour increments.

Our booking system allows you to book up to 24 hours in advance. However, our office is only staffed Monday to Friday, so if you book for a Saturday or Sunday session over that same weekend, we may struggle to arrange everything in time — booking a bit earlier in the week helps us guarantee it.

For cancellations, please contact us directly. Rescheduling can be done through our booking system, as long as it’s at least 24 hours before your session.

Yes — go ahead and book, then let us know your preference. We’ll do our best to arrange it, and if that’s not possible, we’ll get in touch to discuss the options.

Send us your address and preferred time, and we’ll allocate the most suitable instructor, then work out their transport and travel-time cost to give you a quote.

Just the space and the players — a table big enough for four in square or round shape is the best. For example, a long dining table is not a good idea.

A Mahjong mat, a full set for your chosen style, worksheets, and an instructor to guide you throughout.

Yes — plenty of our private lessons are booked for exactly that. It’s built to be a fun, hands-on group activity, not just for serious learners.

our Mahjong Styles

Dear Asia is the only Mahjong club in London offering at least three different styles; our inclusive community is always growing.

Chinese Mahjong

Chinese classic Mahjong — specifically the Hong Kong (old) style — is the most popular version worldwide and is the main style we play here.

Play Chinese Style

american Mahjong

American Mahjong is trending worldwide and plays quite differently from other styles. We’ve taught private clients and are now offering public workshops for anyone who wants to learn and play.

Play American Style

Japanese Riichi

Riichi Mahjong is the most popular style online, and it deserves social time away from the screen. That’s why we’re building a Riichi player community—already home to many enthusiastic players and a number of experienced masters.

More Ways to Learn with Us

We know £300 for a private lesson is a premium price point. Sending trained instructors across London to clients’ homes takes real capacity, so these sessions aren’t designed for the mass market — but the rate stays the same for up to 8 players, so it’s worth calling on friends to join you. Just note that our instructor brings a single Mahjong set, so if you’d like to run two tables, you’ll want a second set on hand.

Alternatively, there are two more affordable ways to learn with us.

Online Private Lessons

Online Private Lessons: You can book a session with one of our teachers for just half the price £150. It has its limitations compared to in-person, but you still get the same instructor and our full course, designed to help you master Mahjong from the comfort of your own home.

Saturday Mahjong workshops

Saturday Mahjong Workshops: These workshops are a fun and social way to learn. Held at the Aldgate Centre, they provide the same expert instruction and supportive atmosphere at a much lower cost. Our newbie workshop teaches Chinese classic. We also start to run American Mahjong workshops too in the afternoon session.
