Japanese riichi Mahjong
Riichi Mahjong is the Japanese variant of the traditional Chinese game, combining deep strategic play with ritualised rules and distinctive scoring. Over the 20th century Riichi evolved into a tightly structured, spectator‑friendly form of Mahjong that rewards timing, risk management, and psychological play. Today it enjoys a passionate following in Japan and a rapidly growing global community—especially online—where livestreams, tutorials, and competitive play have propelled its popularity.
Uniquely Riichi
Riichi adds several signature mechanics that set it apart from other Mahjong styles. Yaku (required hand conditions) define which hands are valid and shape strategic choices; riichi declarations let a player lock in a concealed hand for extra reward while signalling intent to opponents; and dora tiles act as visible score multipliers that create dramatic shifts in value. Additional features like furiten (self‑discard restrictions) and strict scoring granularity emphasise defensive reads and timing as much as raw hand‑building.
Trending in riichi community
In Japan, mahjong parlours have long been places where players sit for serious games—sometimes all day. Parlours often have automatic tables, comfortable seating, and, in some cases, money games. The largest Riichi community today is online, with strong crossover into manga and anime culture. In recent years, Riichi groups have started appearing in the West—at cafés and university clubs—which we’re glad to see. Beyond competition, Riichi is also a social game that brings people together.

Overall the teacher, class and course made an excellent impression and my Daughter wanted to continue learning with them, so I’m very pleased.

Other Mahjong Styles

Chinese Mahjong

Chinese classic Mahjong — specifically the Hong Kong (old) style — is the most popular version worldwide and is the main style we play here.
american Mahjong

American Mahjong is trending worldwide and plays quite differently from other styles. We’ve taught private clients and are now offering public workshops for anyone who wants to learn and play.
Japanese Riichi

Riichi Mahjong is the most popular style online, and it deserves social time away from the screen. That’s why we’re building a Riichi player community—already home to many enthusiastic players and a number of experienced masters.
